Wow! You found also Gobius auratus (morph 2)! Although it may seem strange, specific publications have shown that Gobius xanthocephalus does not live in the Adriatic Sea but in the North Adiatric (North of Murter) the species Gobius auratus has these strange pattern (Link). Herler J., R.A. Patzner & C. Sturmbauer, 2005: A preliminary revision of the Gobius auratus species complex with redescription of Gobius auratus Risso, 1810. J. Nat. Hist. 39: 1043-1075.
Do you have other shots? Your specimen is very particular with the yellow not extended throughout the body.
I tried unsuccessfully on that side of Krk many years ago.
At what depth and on what beach did you meet it? |

Louisy 2002 says xanthocephalus ... I am utterly outdated! :) Weird ... so the north-adriatic morph of auratus looks somewhat like xanthocephalus, but xanthocephalus doesn't exist in the Adriatic Sea? And does the "golden" morph occur in the Northern Adriatic See as well?
I spotted this goby somewhere north of Beach Rudine. I am not sure about the depth ... must have been some metres since I only took three pics alltogether, and they are all from above. Maybe 5 metres?

Yes, Gobius xanthocephalus in Adriatic is a Louisy's mistake now corrected. There are also errors in Pomatoschistus knerii (all juvenile G. cruentatus), Pomatoschistus quagga (the photo below is P. bathi) and others.
No, in North Adiatric there is only G. auratus morph2 (not all yellow). It is a color variation that we are also seeing in some areas of the Aegean Sea.
The situation of G.auratus, G.fallax and G.xanthocephalus is complex, they are genetically very similar species and new future studies could give different conclusions.
Currently the most updated and precise site on the geographical distributions of Mediterranean gobies is that of Patzner. Any changes that are communicated to him, if supported by photos, are updated in a few days. Link |
