I recently returned from leading my tenth and last natural history tour to the north of Cyprus. My mobility and manual dexterity are such that I risk becoming a liability to groups as well as to myself. This very large spider and impressive (body length 15mm, fully extended leg span 55mm+) was found by one of the group under a stone at Aphendrika in the north of the island on 10 April 2018. It seemed very aggressive but we did not take any chances testing out the threat! I would be very grateful if any specialist could possible suggest an identification.
Very many thanks. In The Wildlife of Cyprus (edited by David Sparrow and Eddie John). Robert Bosmans, the auther of the chapter on spiders in that book writes "Euparassus walckenaeri is the only species of Sparassidae listed for Cyprus" . Presumably therefore we can be reasonably sure that this is indeed that species.
