My knowledge about Cephalopods is scarce, but it can be Sepioteuthis lessioniana, which has been already reported from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Maybe Domenico Capua can help us. |

Dear Carl, about a flock of ten Sepioteuthis in Mediterranean sea I don’t think so, however it is no impossible now. Up until now a few specimen, rare example, of Sepioteuthis lessoniana in Aegean Levantine Sea (Zenetos 2009). Ten Sepioteuthis in Cyprus would be an important finding !! About S.sepioidea in Mediterranean sea is possible only by plane !!! I think Loligo sp. in foto. Good foto!!! Ciao

Ciao, thank you for your response. Here I have two more images. The exact location where I spotted the squids was Chlorakas/Paphos/Cyprus in front of the St. Georg Hotel. Unfortunately the visibility was very poor as it can be seen on the image where the squids fled away. Actually there was a second flock even closer to the shore but the visibility there made it impossible to take pictures.

Ok, now with these crops I can see that the fins are very shorter than those of S. lessoniana. Therefore, I agree with Domenico. |

I have never seen S.lessoniana living. I have seen only dead specimen of S.lessionana, it seem strongly a cuttlefish but very robust and muscular than this with muscolar fins surrounding pallium and obviously without cuttlebone but with gladius inside. Pay attention! It seem strongly a cuttlefish at first. ciao domenico |

Ciao, I looked through my images again and found one image (croped) where the fins seem to cover nearly the full length of the pallium. The literature I studied meanwhile states that juvenile Sepioteuthis lessoniana show shorter fins than adultes. So my vote now goes along for Sepioteuthis lessoniana. Immagine: 197,32 KB |

Today I got confirmation from the HELLENIC CENTRE FOR MARINE RESEARCH (Rhodes (Rhodos)) that my squids are in fact as far as it can be identified by photos to be Sepioteuthis lessoniana. |
