Astropecten sp.?
Soggetto1, diametro 10 cm, foto scattata di sera, il soggetto si trovava sulla sabbia (poi l'ho momentaneamente appoggiato io su roccia per delle foto)
Era simile ma diversa dalle tante A. bispinosus presenti. Era piccola, solitaria, veloce, con un colore particolare, le spine delle placche marginali dorsali "spettinate" e molto mobili. Io penso sia A.spinulosus o A. platyacanthus?
Subject1, diametr 10 cm, photo took in the evening, this star were in tha sand (I took the star and I put on a rock for took same photos)
It were similar but differt of a lot of A. bispinosus. It were small, solitary, fast, with a particular coulor, the spines in dorsal marginal plates were not combed and its were very mobility spines. I think it is A.spinulosus or A. platyacanthus?

Soggetto2, diametro 8 cm.
Era simile ma diversa dalle tante A. bispinosus presenti. Era piccola, con un colore particolarmente chiaro e con un disco centrale particolarmente grande e "bombato". Io penso sia A. platyacanthus?

It were similar but differt of a lot of A. bispinosus. It were small, with a particular clear coulor and the central disc were very big and convex. I think it is A. platyacanthus?

Era simile ma diversa dalle tante A. bispinosus presenti. Era piccola, con un colore particolarmente scuro. Io penso sia A. bispinosus giovane?

Era simile ma diversa dalle tante A. bispinosus presenti. Aveva il disco centrale estremamente grande e convesso (bombato). Io penso sia A. bispinosus che ha appena ingerito qualcosa di grande???

Astropecten platyacanthus has long arms, with R/r about 5.5. It can grow up to 18 cm in diameter, usually 10-15 cm. Dorsal surface brown, ventral surface pale brown or yellow. Marginal spines usually yellowish, often with violet apex. For years misidentified with A. bispinosus, from which it differs because:
a) in A. platyacanthus dorsal plates are almost completely covered with spines (laterally naked in A bispinosus), with a strong spine inserted far from the upper internal margin (a similar strong spine is present in A. bispinosus on the upper internal margin)
b) in A. platyacanthus ventral plates are almost completely covered with spines and small scales, sometimes leaving a clear central area (ventral plates naked in A bispinosus, with only a series of small marginal spines and a big, external flattened spine).

You are very kind and precise and I thank you for the good reply. This infomations are very useful but I ask you a last pleasure because I undestand your keys but I can't use it because I'm not studied bilogy and I can't distinguish very good the particular of a star .
Which is the specie of "Soggetto 5"?

after a deep study of the photo, the specimen 5 seems to be Astropecten platyacanthus (marginal spines yellowish, disc bigger than A. bispinosus, thw two spines in the supermarginal plates bewtween the arms are not bigger than the others), but I must remark, that the only valid way to differenciate between Astropecten bispinosus and Astropecten platyacanthus is at the laboratory with a stereomicroscope.
Sometimes the differences are clear, but sometimes is impossible to differenciate these species only with photos.

Now I understand some difference between A.platyacanthus and A.bispinosus that I can see when I take a photo (I have understand too that these are not the sure peculiarities of distinction).
You are very kind and I ask you 3 more question:
1- Why do you think that "Soggetto1" is A.platyacanthus?
2- Why do you think that "Soggetto2" is A.spinulosus?
3- I ask you last 2 identifications with more photos of "Soggetto6" and "Soggetto7":
Soggetto6, diametr about 14-18 cm
I think this seems to be Astropecten platyacanthus because it have marginal spines yellowish, disc bigger, the two spines in the supermarginal plates bewtween the arms are not bigger than the others, dorsal surface brown?

soggeto 1 is for me clearly Astropecten platyacanthus because the two spines in the superomarginal plates between two arms are not bigger than other, the colour is brown). Its maximum size is 18 cm.
soggetto 2 is for me Astropecten spinulosus because this species has usually grey colour, the two spines in the superomarginal plates between two arms are not bigger than others and it is smaller: 8 cm). Its maximum size is about 12 cm.
