Hi all,

SOrry for not writing in italian but I believe you all will understand me better in english.
I am a portuguese biologist working on the biology and conservation of several butterfly and moth species in the mediterranean context and right now am doing a research on the genetics and conservation of the butterfly Euchloe tagis (Pieridae). It is to be found in discrete, highly local populations which enhances the interestingness of a genetic study.
So, for the success of the work I am doing I am asking if any of you would have the possibility in accessing some genetic samples of this species from the italian mainland (it is confined to the northwest)this season and the inclusion of some Euchloe insularis from Sardinia would be interesting as well. Both species should be flying by now.

Thanks for replying, do you know of anyone who could help me out in this? The Italian populations as being in the tip of the species ' distribution interest me much and it will be difficult for me to go to Italia this spring.

I'm collecting a lot of specimens in alcool waiting for genetic analyses. Unfortunately I not yet collected E tagis and E insularis. However, I will collect around Tuscany and Sardinia this season and I hope to collect these species also. The main problem is that E tagis is a protected species in Tuscany. For the National Park of Tuscan Archipelago I have permissions, but not for the mainland. However, I can ask for. Moreover, I have several E ausonia from Tuscany and Elba island, let me know if you need these specimens also. Finally, if you are interested to couple geometric morphometrics to your genetic study I'm disposed to help you also with this

I remember that I also have Euchloe specimens from Tunisia and Morocco most probably suitable for DNA!

Thank you all for replying.
From my lab experinece, the DNA gets degraded very quickly in such fragile butterflies and I haven't been able to get any from specimens older than two or three years old so I guess I have to decline CMB's nice offer, sorry! Keeping them dry also doesn't help much and the best way to keep the samples is always to freeze them or keep them in a rather pure alcool solution (or both).
Leonardo, I have replied to you offline so expect me to be bugging your e-mail box.
Clido, this forum primes for its high quality and nicest content so congratulations for contributing towards nature conservation. I hope to be participating quite often although I'm neither from Italy nor Portugal is exactly a mediterranean country (well... more or less).

PS: Oh, and yes I understand most italian (only some nouns are more difficult to understand) but what prevents me from writing in italian is the fear of mixing it with spanish and portuguese which would appear rather messy.
