So, I was snorkeling into a small cave (depth about 4 metres, near Silo) and took some pics of the view. Having no oxygen I couldn't explore it in detail ... so I missed this small goby and therefore didn't take any better pics. Still, I'm curious ...
Any ideas?

Maybe Gammogobius steinitzi but it is not easy to exclude Odondebuenia balearica and Corcyrogobius liechtensteini.
I also explored various caves in Krk several years ago, they are very beautiful and full of life. It is a special area for gobies, however you have been exceptionally good and lucky, you have photographed very rare species.

Oh yeah, I didn't even dare to say Gammogobius! I will lay siege to that cave in July.

Yes, I am delighted with Krks underwater life. I was fascinated as a little boy, over 40 years ago, and I am equally fascinated now as a biologist. But back then I didn't dare snorkel into caves, and even nowadays I am not to tell my dear mother ... ;)

I am not a "real" diver, I am only ever snorkeling. So sadly my ability to explore those caves is reduced to entrance areas to max. 10 metres depth ...

I am very pleased about you complimenting my pics ... since I have been using yours for determination for some years now. Invaluable help, like this whole forum in general. Thank you!

I also only snorkel with a Canon G16, I like to visit the few caves on the surface, actually it is an activity in which we need to be very careful but in Krk it gives a lot of satisfaction. Like you, I snorkeled in Croatia since I was a child, then from 2000 I started taking photos too. I have been reproached even today by my mother because according to her at 45 I am too old to freedive and I do not tell him that I also go to the cave.

Generally I love sandy or detrital seabeds more, in Krk I photographed my first Gobius couchi and I learned to recognize the goby. Glavotok camping area and Stara Baska area are my favorite, but in the future I want to visit Vrbkin well and the other areas where you dived. In the past I had dived in search of Gobius auratus but with no luck (in this forum you can see photos of this species taken at a depth of about 4 m from this area).

Your photos are not photos that are made with luck alone, to need an expert on those backdrops. Are you a marine biologist or just a marine biology enthusiast like me?

Mothers ...

I am a biologist, but I learned botany and rainforest ecology. So I am a "north adriatic marine biology enthusiast" ... really haven't been in the water anywhere else than Krk.

Some pictures are good because I literally take hundreds of them. I am not a photographer, but a "photograph enthusiast" ... I enjoy the incredible quality of rather cheap equipment nowadays. And the incredible possibilities of editing even a layman can handle.

I prefer the trottoir and perpendicular cliffs, all those tiny holes with some little blennids peeking out. I like "freeclimbing" under water. This is why I got kevlar gloves this year, ordinary diving gloves will be ragged after a few days of limestone rock.

I also don't have great photographic skills, I take hundreds of photos just trying to focus correctly and then select. I always dive with a left glove (which I break every year), a lead belt (which really makes a difference in the photograph), a diving hood (which alone keeps me warm enough) and a long-sleeved diving shirt. I only ever use the "old G16" (I bought a second used one) because it allows you to get very close to the subject even if there would be more modern cameras.

For 3 years I went diving in Krk in May then for 10 in Rab in May (only so in Croatia you can dive without a motorboat over your head) but from 2020 I have to go in summer months because my daughter has started school. Croatia is special in May.

Don't get me started on motorboats and waterscooters ... but fortunately I snorkle right on the cliffs for most of the time. They don't dare go there.

Krk is an underwater paradise in summer as well. I remember July 2015 especially fondly, the water was clear like air! But I always wished to visit earlier in the year. Maybe when my son ist out of school in five years ...

Is Rab comparable to Krk? I always wondered whether Rab or Cres have different fauna than Krk. But I never went somewhere else, I am enchanted by this island.

Lead belt. Of course! Thank you.

Rab is a paradise in May, it has sand, deserted beaches in the middle of forests. It also has rock but much less than Krk. You can find Buenia affinis, Gobius couchi, G.fallax, G.roulei, Pomatoschistus quagga, P. bathi, P. marmoratus, Zebrus zebrus. In May it is a paradise (if you don't find bad weather) but in the season it is devastated by speedboats and too many people.

Cres is similar to Krk although it has fewer dive sites. However, the Punta Kriza area outside the sea is one of the most natural places left where you can find deer on the beach.

I also like Pag very much, this island is similar to Krk but also has sandy areas like Rab and even in season it is always very liveable. On this island I find Millerigobius macrocephalus, G. couchi, G. fallax, G. roulei, P. bathi, P. marmoratus.

You can't find Krk caves elsewhere. Underwater it is perhaps the island that most lives even if Rab, Cres and Pag are very similar and very interesting. If I were you I would try them.
