Classe: Echinoidea Ordine: Spatangoida Famiglia: Loveniidae Genere: Echinocardium Specie:Echinocardium cordatum
After studying the genus Echinocardium in the Mediterranean Sea and after examining several testes, I can conclude that E. fenauxi is more abundant in the SE coast of Spain than Echinocardium cordatum. These species are very similar so it is very easy to make a mistake when we are trying to identify a test or a specimen with spines. Please, visit the following pages to see the differences:
The main differences between these two species are:
1. In E. fenauxi the shape of the periproct is expanded sideways (in E. cordatum this is in a vertical sense). 2. In E. fenauxi there is a single row of pores on the sides of the umbulacrum. In E.cordatum there are 2 rows of pores on each side. 3. In E. fenauxi the posterior petals each have more than 12 pairs of pores (only about 10 pairs in E. cordatum).
